On this particular trip, Rutherford shared the status of the CBSI ministry in Malawi.
Rutherford revealed that he was having difficulties getting the ministry up and
running, especially financially. Frequently, Rutherford found himself funding the
ministry out of his own pocket.
David and his wife Gillian, having had many years of experience in CBSI, David having
been a Teaching Leader at the York class as well as serving in his present role and
Gillian, having served as National Director for 12 years, felt that with their combined
expertise they could help develop the Ministry in Malawi.
Since then David and Gillian have travelled to Malawi many times to help and support
Rutherford. As the story was told, gifts started to flood in and CBSI UK as well
as many Christian friends, started to help Malawi in many ways, both financially
and also assisting initially with the purchase of a computer, scanner and laser printer.
When David first met Rutherford, the existing classes had so few translations that
the groups would study the lessons over and over again. They hoped that when funds
became available new lessons would be translated. Today the translation of The
Acts of the Apostles has been completed in the Chichewa language, along with The
Gospel of Luke, God’s Amazing Book and Ephesians. The translation of the study
of The Pentateuch is currently in progress.
Especially blessed by the growth of CBSI Malawi is a group of 40 female participants
who have the HIV virus. The leader of this group, who walked 15 kilometres to meet
David and Gillian, told them of the women’s’ joy. People with HIV are usually shunned
in Malawi. The group is so popular because the women feel accepted and loved. They
are revelling in the love and acceptance of God!
With nearly 100 groups and classes in Malawi, Rutherford is now able to visit these
classes to encourage, distribute lessons and shepherd its leaders and their 1,000
members. He now has money for transport. CBSI UK has also helped provide funding
for eight bicycles for Area Leaders. Gillian and David also visited with a team
of opticians to provide spectacles for those who were unable to read the Bible because
of poor eyesight.

David Mason first met CBSI National Director, Rutherford Banda, when Rutherford came
to his rescue in 2003 on David’s initial trip to Malawi. David who is UK’s Chairman
of Trustees, was in Malawi at the invitation of Christian Resource Ministries to
conduct some Bible Seminars.
Arriving in the capital city of Lilongwe, David had no idea where to stay. His
CBSI contacts directed him to Rutherford Banda, who appeared as an ‘angel of mercy’
and found David safe lodging. This was the beginning of a strong friendship.
